Light Machine Guns
What we categorize as a light machine gun
Light machine guns are infantry weapons designed to be able to be carried and operated by a single man or with an assistant. The idea behind them is suppressing fire, sending a barrage of brass down rang as quickly as possible to keep opponents pinned down. Designed with a quantity over quality mindset some of the most Iconic ones are the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon or SAW, and the Russian RPK.
Some characteristics of LMGs are a heavier barrel that can handle the heat of prolonged rapid fire, a bipod to support the weight and manage the recoil of the gun during use, and a large box or drum mag or belt fed capabilities. Most light machine-gun fire standard rifle rounds like 7.62x39mm, and d 5.56x45mm, typically the standard round carried by the other members of the squad.
